Understanding the Basics - part 3

    The Roulette Wheel

There are two different forms of roulette wheel. The first is the European wheel which has 37 slots numbered 0 to 36, and the house edge is 2.63. The second type is the American wheel which has 38 numbers in the sense that a double zero is added. Note that the addition of the extra number increases the house edge to 5.26 percent.

On a standard roulette wheel, the numbers 1 through 36 are divided evenly among red and black “pockets”. The pocket is actually the container that a ball may come to rest in. In addition to the 36 red and black pockets, there are either 1 or 2 green pockets. These pockets then contain the number zero and double zero (00) on the roulette wheel. If you will take a closer look to a standard roulette wheel, you will notice that the numbers are not distributed in a random fashion. For every number on the wheel, directly across from it is the next highest even number. Typically, the red and black alternate, and the pairs of even numbers alternate with pairs of odd numbers, with 0 and 00 exceptions.
